I've beaten the arena and am ranked first. These are some tips i used in order to get there.
When fighting in the arena, choose the level of Abandoned Highway. You start on top of a building, while the opponent will come towards you from the other side of the area. You dont have to leave the top of the building, you can fire at him as he comes closer. And when your confident enough, you can go down and finish him off.
(Note: the opponent that looks like an ambulance will actually come towards you but then just stop, from there just blow him away.) Some of the other mechs do the same.
Location-- the building you start on (abandonded highway) is at one of the corners of the boundries. Opponents will sometimes fly out of bounds and you will win, so go to the back of the building and chill there for a lil bit. This works very well with those that are fast or seem to move all over the place. Try it on all the opponents, you will be surprised. That also works if your down on the ground fighting too.
Wasting their ammo- at the top of the building, by flying up, it will sometimes cause the opponent to fire ammo off. as soon as you fly up, just drop back down to the building. Obviously try to dodge whatever they shoot up.
Tip: in beating others is by letting them waste there ammo. Go to garage and by adding "enemy weapons" you can see how much they have left. This worked well with Werehound and others.
Weapons:
Back/ Extensions- large rockets (damage=3100), small missiles. get something that will counter enemy missiles. (push left joystick in to activate)
Guns-spread bazooka, plasma rifle, machine gun(1000ammo)
Blade- i prefer the long, lt grey blade, its a powerful, light, well balanced blade. (use it to open locked doors or when your out of ammo)
Optional items-
sell: "increased braking" thing that you are given through missions.
Buy: lock-on increase, reduced lock-on time, shell protection

Running our of ammo can really bite, if this happens frequently
purchase 2 machine guns for yoiur back units (not the dual one that
costs
77500, but TWO seperate ones for 35000. (you need strong legs to hold
them)
They have 300 ammo each. Also, it helps to buy a machine gun, they
have
450-1000 rounds, and they do a lot of damage.
Defeating Ares will give yoiu 1,500,000 credits which is a crap load
(enough
to completely create 2 AC's of complete custom choice).
If you are a beginner, defeat the first mission or 2, but some nice
weapons
and die twice(die, not fail a mission but die), and then the game will
reatart, you will keep your weapons you bought, but lose the money you
had
left over, do this about 5 times or so until you REALLY have good
weapons, (i
reccomend the machine gun).
Having good legs and generators are essential to beating Ares and other
Arena
opponents as aa Raven.
Werehound is always the hardest to defeat. He has low ammo, so go to
the
Abbandoned Highway and sit on the top on the building on which you
start.
move to the edge to taunt him and he will fire at you, he will quickly
run
out of ammo with out ever touching you. Once he is without a weapon,
jump to
the ground and begin the attack. Strifing is a great way to defeat
this
difficult opponent.
When ever you defeat someone in the Arena, and yoiu don't have an
emblem, go
to their name and hit X. Once yoiu see the next screen hit Triangle.
Then
you will see their stats. Hit Select and Start at the same time for
about 3
or 4 tries until yoiu hear an equip sound. You will then have the
exact same
emblem on your left shoulder or arm!
Tips:
Buy a really nice Left hand weapon (slicing razor)
Having boosters makes you able to go higher depending on the booster
type AND
your weight, not just booster type.
Having a nice head on your AC is not completely essential, yoiu can do
without a great one for a long time.
Don't trust your allies in missions, they will VERY VERY often decide
to
attack you.
Always save before every mission, incase you need to pay for repairs or
ammo,
and its more than you receive for getting to job done.
Leave missions where they pay you upfront, it gets you money and no
damage.
(its a win/win situation.

I learned every single one of these from playing my game for less than
a weak
(yes you only need a weak to be really good so don't give up) so
always save
and always try your hardest on the missions, they can really cost ya
when you
need money for Arena opponents. Have fun gaming!
